Quick Check
To determine if your agricultural operation requires an air permit, you may perform a "Quick Check" by answering the following questions.  However, it should be noted that this "Quick Check" is based on specific assumptions (e.g., crop water usage factors, well depths, emission factors, and equipment usage) that are not accurate for all farms.  In order to determine whether or not permits are required with more certainty, (a) emissions should be calculated and compared with District permitting thresholds (see manual emissions calculator), or (b) emissions should be calculated using the District's automated calculator (see "Automated Calculator").

QUICK CHECK: If you answer "yes" to any of the questions below, continue to "Automated Calculator" for a more accurate analysis.

1. Farming operations using stationary internal combustion engines with horsepower greater than 50 bhp,
2. Dairy operations with 1,000 milk cows or 1,190 milk cow equivalent,
3. Feedlot operations with 2,252 or more steers,
4. Broiler ranch with 650,000 or more birds,
5. Laying hen ranch with 500,000 or more birds, or
6. Turkey ranch with 100,000 or more birds

* This is a conservative number.  Depending on the type of dairy, you may be able to exceed this number without requiring permits.  Please contact Ramon Norman at (559) 230-5909 for further information.

Otherwise, you do NOT need an air permit.

Automated Calculator
We must calculate the emissions from your agricultural operation to determine if you will need to obtain a permit. A permit will be required if the calculated NOx and VOC emissions from your agricultural operation is equal to or greater than 12.5 tons/year.

In order to determine this, please answer the following six questions.

NOx: 0 tons/yr
VOC: 0 tons/yr
