Automotive engineers are answering California's concerns by taking up the challenge to help improve the gloomy air pollution picture. Building on new technologies, they discovered they could make cars that emit exhaust that's cleaner than the air in many cities. They can even produce nearly emission-free vehicles. Right now, some car makers are voluntarily selling cleaner cars in other places where air pollution regulations, up until now, are less strict. In California, we can buy cars right now that make our air cleaner. These new models, in general, are 95% cleaner than cars made in the 1970s. When we combine that with buying fuel-efficient new cars that deliver more miles per gallon, we pollute less and save money. Unfortunately, not every one is looking for air-friendly vehicles, and we all pay in the end.
