Fuel Cells: The Exhaust is Just Plain H2O
nother exciting technology allows cars to run on electric power produced
from fuel cells. These cells combine hydrogen and oxygen without burning
or combustion to produce electricity. When pure hydrogen is used, the
only emission is water vapor. When another fuel is used, there are some
emissions, but substantially less than from most engines that burn fuel.
Even fuel cell vehicles that are engineered to extract hydrogen from gasoline
available at the corner station are ultra-clean. The fuel cell technology
bridges the gap between Ultra- and Zero-Emission Vehicles.
