Ozone Controls
Ozone is
primarily controlled by reducing emissions of precursors through state
and federal laws, District rules, and voluntary programs such as
incentives. State and
federal laws and regulations address precursor emissions from motor
vehicles; other mobile and stationary internal combustion and diesel
emissions; emissions from aircraft, ships and trains; and emissions from
consumer product use. District rules primarily reduce emissions from stationary
sources, but are also beginning to address area sources, indirect
sources (e.g., warehouses, shopping malls, housing developments, etc.)
and fleets of vehicles in public service.
Incentive programs encourage the purchase and use of technology
with reduced precursor emissions; examples include electric lawnmowers
instead of gasoline powered mowers, gasoline/electric hybrid passenger
vehicles instead of gasoline or diesel passenger vehicles; and
cleaner-burning diesel engines instead of older models historically used
in agricultural operations.
